Kiev (or Kyiv in Ukrainian pronunciation) is one of the most remarkable cities in the former Soviet Union. Full of green parks and gardens, gold church caps between an ancient city creates a comfortable atmosphere to visit. Kiev is full of sightseeing, its history counts over 1500 years and this city is considered to be a cradle of Russian, Belorussian and Ukrainian culture.

One can only imagine what Kiev would have become if not for the invasion in 1240 by the roaming Mongol Tatars led by the grandson of Genghis Khan.

The 50,000 people who called Kiev home had built a magnificent fortress around the city. The Golden Gates of Kiev (of which you can still see parts of today, and is a must sight to see) withstood the strongest of the Mongolian battering rams for 10 weeks and 4 days and still could not be penetrated.

The Lyadski Gate, located at the present site of Independence Square, was not quite as strong, as this is where the plunderers eventually broke through. Of over 8000 homes and buildings, only two structures were left standing. Of 50,000 people, only one thousand people escaped with their lives. Crafts, traditions, chronicles, art, buildings, all were lost. The great Kyivan Rus dynasty ceased to exist. The Mongols held Kiev for the next 80 years before they just "roamed "away.

Only several centuries later did life come back to the central part of today's Kiev. During the first half of this century again Kiev's historic architecture, treasures, art, spacious boulevards lined of chestnut and linden trees would suffer at the hands of the Bolsheviks, Nazis and Soviets. The Germans destroyed 40% of the city during their occupation, but it was the retreating Soviets who destroyed much of Khreshchatyk Street (the "main street of Kyiv") and blew up the Dormition Cathedral. With the fall of the Soviet Union and Ukraine's declaration of independence in 1991, changes are taking place at an amazing pace. Statues of communist heroes have been toppled; streets, squares and avenues are being renamed. There you can find a unique outdoor museum of Ukrainian architecture, which occupies many acres. You can watch a National opera or ballet, or perhaps go down into underground caves in Lavra Orthodoxal monastery, with a candle in your palms... Kiev looks great in May in chestnut blossom time or in October when leaves turn colors.

Kreshchatyk at night

Kreschatyk street at nights looks marvelous! On weekends the entire traffic is rerouted turning over the area to pedestrians and street shows. Mimes, clowns and street actors make the public laugh and have fun. Young people make dates at nearby Kreshchatyk metro ( underground) station and restaurants. In the center of the city you can visit many ethnic restaurants, such as Ukrainian, Irish, Mexican, Thai, American, Chinese and others. In the Nezalezhnosti square underground cross you can find Ukrainian alternative to McDonalds- fast food restaurant " Shvydko" where you will find vareniki stuffed with mushrooms, mashed potatoes, Russian and Ukrainian salads and Ukrainian beer.

As you can see, we are witnessing a great time in Kiev's and in Ukraine's history. The re-birth of a nation before our very eyes. Maybe this is one of the reasons why I strongly urge everyman who is considering this wonderful pursuit of his own dreambride, to include Kiev in your plans. The cleanest and safest of all the larger FSU cities I have seen, things are much cheaper here than in Moscow or St. Petersburg. No traffic problems, easy to get around the city, the dollar goes a lot further, many wonderful things to see and do and a LOT of sincere, beautiful women live here.
