Crimea is an area of Ukraine
and a peninsula on the Black Sea.
People have lived here from ancient times, even when they had
to live in a cave. It is why Crimea has a very rich history and
many historical, archeological and cultural sites.
Ancient Greeks founded their northern colony "Chersones"
about 2500 years ago, several cave-towns apeared in VI Century,
Genova's people built several fortresses in 15 century...
|
|
In XIII century Tatar people
came to Crimea and spread all over the peninsula. In XVIII century
Crimea was joined to Russia so many Russian people moved here.
In 1954 Crimea became part of Ukraine, what it is till now. But
due it's long and rich history, there are over 100 different nationalities
living in Crimea now. The climate is very gentle and warm. Crimea
has several climatic zones which are pretty different from each
other.

If you're coming to Crimea from the North, first what you'll see
will be the huge fields, flat with no end. The flat part extends
to Simferopol, and then you will enter into the most beautiful
and attractive part - the mountain part.
Crimean mountains are not so high as Caucasus and go along the
seashore. Highest point is Roman Kosh mountain which is 1545 metres
above sea level. The narrow strip of land between sea and the
mountains is called the South Shore of Crimea, and this area is
most popular recreation place.
|
|
Center of the South Shore is
with no doubt Yalta. Beautiful nature, great landscape, warm subtropical
climate made Yalta "the capital" of rest of many hundreds
thousands people.
On South-West of Crimea in 1783 year was founded a city which
is well-know as hero-city, Sevastopol. It was founded as a navy
base and it is why Sevastopol was and is mostly a military city.
It was a place of biggest battles during Crimean War (1854-55)
and also Second World War. People paid attention to Sevastopol's
area as a perfect military base from a long time ago. Genovas
Fortress "Chembalo", and the most secret Soviet submarine
base were built in Balaklava, near Sevastopol. Eastern Crimea
is full of "grey history" from ancient times.

Kerch, Feodosia, Stari Krim are cities that
are several thousands of years old. Crimea is very popular place
for hikers, too. There are many nice rivers, rocks, canyons, caves
and forests in Crimea.
Most famous and attractive mountain Ay-Perty is excellent ski-area
from December till March. |
